Why is teacher parent communication important?

Let us understand the maths behind the child’s life. In India, a child gets enrolled to the nursery at the age of 3 and then completes his kindergarten by 6. Later on, he gets enrolled to standard 1. Before going to nursery or playgroup, the child is nurtured and cared by his parents. Parents teach basic values, manners and also give some basic knowledge to the child. In those first six years, child gets all the basic knowledge about letters, alphabets, numbers, colours, seasons, etc. When the child is in growing ages of his life, importance of both teacher and parents increases. When the child gets support from both of them; he gets that support that is need. They both guide the child as per their work. Teacher guides the child in school whereas parents in the home. Then the teacher needs to know how the child is doing at home and the parents need it at the school. Then it becomes incredibly important for both of them to communicate efficiently so as they can get to know about the child at alternative places. It helps both of them to share information among them and it indeed helps to analyse the child’s growth. Regular and consistent communication among the parents and teacher promotes the parents to take active participation in their child’s studies and also keep them alert about their child’s performance.

How teacher and parents can communicate?

Parents-teacher meet (PTA):

These are generally the meeting that are organized by the school department for the parents and teachers to interact which each about the child’s progress. Various aspects regarding the child are discussed between them. But this meet is limited to one or two times in a year which also lasts for a limited time of about 15 minutes per child.

Calls and message:

Technology has taken a giant leap for the mankind. It has reduced the distance between two people. Teachers as well as parents have been benefitted a lot when it comes to communication between them. Calling and messaging helps them to communicate efficiently during the non-working hours of the school. However, it can’t replace face-to-face communication of parents and teacher during the PTA.

Social networking:

Social networking platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook helps the teacher to connect to parents of various students in one group. On this platform, each of them has the chance to express their thoughts. Due to this exchange process, various peoples in the group get enlighten. The stress on teacher gets significantly reduced and a lot of time is being saved.

How to improve the teacher parents’ communication

The parent and teacher should have a firm believe of trust within each other. This forms the base of relation between parent and teacher which will further lead to better communication. Both of them need to be humble to each other. Each one of them should be able express their views. Always remember, the communication between parent and teacher should be a two-way communication. Each one of them should acknowledge each other for the contributions that they have made for the child and should also express thanks. Listening is also important in communication between them. Both should understand that the result of this communication is going to affect the child’s future. There should be sense of responsibilities among both of them.

Steps to be taken for better communication

Teacher are for teaching

It is necessary for us to understand that teachers are for teaching. Indulging them in other activities can lead to loss of the students in academics. They should be given the task only related to the students. This will help them to save time and energy which can be utilized for the students or for communicating with their parent.

Ratio to number of students to teacher should be less

This decreases the load on the teacher. They can concentrate individually to each student’s progress and would help the students to perform well. The teacher can communicate with the parents of each students for a long period of time. The teacher’s productivity will be at peak due to this.

Use of technology

Technology plays an important role in the communication in this 21st century. Use of technology by the parents as well as teacher can boost the communicating experiences by breaking down the distance barriers and time allocations. Proper infrastructure should be made available so as effective communication can take place.
