An effective guide to score good marks in exam (even 100 out of 100).

 Exams and good marks-

Every one of us wants to score good marks in the exam. Doesn’t matter if the exam is big or small, a class test or an exam which determines your future, all we want is good marks.

Just close your eyes for a while and think of an extraordinary student who wants to score less marks or zero in his/her exam. I bet you that your reaction with amazement would read ‘who will be this student who don’t want good marks?’

You want good marks in exams to show that you have done extremely well in your academic. This is because people believe more in marks than the knowledge that the student have gathered in his life. To some point, it is correct as because marks are necessary to differentiate between two students in terms of academics.

You require good marks for admission in good college, for scholarships and for many more stuff.

Some students score more marks in the exam whereas some can’t even score satisfactory marks. This is because some students don’t study properly and can’t prepare well for exams.

The art of scoring good marks depends not only in your preparations for exam but also on time when you are appearing for the exam.

Further in this article, we will put some tips before you with detail analysis and practices related to the topic of scoring good marks in exam. By considering these points and applying them in your preparation would help you to come up with flying color and help you give that small edge over your student competitor in the exam.

1. Study smart, not just hard-

When I ask students, “How can you score good marks?” and they usually come up with an answer “study hard.” No, this is a wrong answer. You don’t have to study hard to secure good marks. Just think of a student in your class who didn’t studied very hard and still managed to score good marks.

This may arouse a question in your mind, or you may just arguably say that I might be his luck. But in beginning, I just said that he didn’t studied very hard doesn’t possibly mean he hadn’t studied. In fact, he studied smartly for the exam.

Smart work is generally the work in which possible results are obtained in minimum efforts. So, its simple, why to study hard even if you can score good marks with smart work?

I have seen many students in my life who study day and night for the exams. In fact, they even forget their schedule for the day. So, here are some tips for smart work:

• Make proper schedule for studies-

Students should make proper timetable for exam preparation. Special time duration should be made for studies. Each task for day should be given specific time duration. Select your time for studies. Either it will be in early morning, in afternoon or in late night, it doesn’t matter. You can choose time as per your requirement.

There is no real hard shift between time in which you can learn fast. In fact, it is found that only 30% of the students study according to the timetable and in which 2 out of every 3 students get good marks in the exam.

Studying day long without any break can decrease your productivity and you eventually can’t remember what you studied. Break are important between your studies so that you can relax a bit after your studies.

• Use of mnemonics and other learning techniques-

Mnemonics
mnemonics

Mnemonics is a learning technique which helps you retain information in your brain by breaking down them into small parts and then learning them by applying some sequence or logic. This technique is generally used to memorizes the items in a list or some item in order. This technique is generally used by small children.

It consists of taking the initial letters of the items in the list and then making some words with small initial and then making sentence from those words. These sentences are easy to remember as because they are made of words which are generally used in our day to day life.

When I was young studying in probably third or fourth standard, it was very difficult for me to remember the names of planet in proper sequence. Then our teacher introduced us mnemonics for the first time. She said, “Just remember-My Very Earnest Mother Just serve us Nuts” and the mnemonics for planet is done. Each initial letter of each words is the same for that of planet- Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

My            - Mercury

Very         - Venus

Earnest   - Earth

Mother   - Mars

Just - Jupiter

serve       - Saturn

us - Uranus

Nuts        -     Neptune

Another technique which I prefer over other learning technique is the Feynman technique. It was introduced by Dr. Richard Feynman, a renowned physicist and a great teacher. The principle behind this technique is simple-if you can’t teach someone, you haven’t learned it quit well.

2. Stick to the syllabus-

Many students make this common mistake of not considering the curriculum or syllabus for the exam. Some students try to learn something which is not even a part of syllabus. As I said before, this article is just for scoring marks and not for gaining knowledge.

I do acknowledge that there is no harm in learning something extra. In fact, it adds to your knowledge. But learning new things require time and if you invest that time in learning topics in your syllabus or trying to revise your topics, it would be more beneficial. All you require for your exam preparation is time, the more time you get for preparation, the more marks you will get in the exam.

3. Practicing previous years question paper and question banks:

This is by far the most important tip to be considered when you are preparing boards exams. You want a proper combination of study and practice if you want to get good marks. Only studying won’t guaranty you of good grades. Practicing question papers, as many as possible, helps you to understand the pattern of the exam, types of question asked in the exam, marks calculation and ultimately help you to increase your time while solving problems. It is nothing but a mock test which helps you prepare for your aim.

Don’t forget to get your practice paper assess by your teacher so that you can study topics in which you are weak. Try to get remarks from the teacher for better results in the exam. Always remember, practice makes man perfect. Practice as much as you can so that on exam day, you would say, “Let the question paper be easy or hard, I would solve anything.”

4. Preparation one day before exam-

Students generally fell tense when the exams are approaching near. They have some fear in their mind which is very obvious. But this spike in the fear should not exceed a particular limit. Due to this, all your preparation would go in vain.

All you need is to calm a bit and try to revise all the topic one by one. Don’t try to revise all the topic at once. Follow a proper schedule for all the topics on that day. Don’t try to exaggerate on learning so that it won’t hamper it won’t hamper what you have already learned. Take a good sleep at night. Don’t try to miss your food in order to get more time. Have your dinner on regular time.

Just before appearing for exams, take a quick look at the notes which you have made during your preparation. This last-minute look in your notes just stick to your eyes.

5. Paper presentation:

No matter how hard you prepare for your exams, how much time to study, how well do you cover all your syllabus, all that matter is how to write your exams.

It is based on how you present your answers to the examiner so that examiner could check it and award you good marks. In this very process, paper presentation is an important topic. Its about how you present your knowledge in front of the examiner.

Man has a complex vision and his vision soothes when he found something which is well managed and presented. Just take a roll off your time and think whose paper would you like to see- a paper with simple, easy and legible handwriting proper spaced, margined along, with detailed answers or a paper with handwriting which can’t even be read, which is all messed up and don’t know where to find an answer for a question. Eventually you would like to see something that soothes your eyes.

Think of the examiner, he is a human being just like you with two eyes, two ears, one nose and one mouth. He wants to check a paper with less difficulties for him. A well-presented paper just solves this problem. He feels an interest within himself while assessing the paper. It takes him less time as because the paper is well structured and there is no difficulty in assessing the paper. Paper presentation is not just about decorating the answer paper.

No matter if you just decorate the paper, if you don’t write anything that is worth, you will end up getting less marks. Presentation is just a step forward in letting your knowledge being accessed by examiner in the easiest way to the examiner. Here are some practical tips for a great paper presentation-

1. Keep your handwriting simple and           legible.

2. Make proper margins, do give excessive gap for them.

3. Put the question number for your answers properly

4. If possible, try to solve each question as per the sequence.

5. Give proper space between your answers, don’t create mess

6. If you write something wrong, just put a cross over it.

This tip is just for those who have written papers. There are no such tips for those who are appearing for multiple choice question test (MCQ) test. One small tip for them- darken your answer’s circle properly, don’t let it go out. The checking of answer sheet is done by computers. If the circle is not darkened properly, it is not considered legit and you end up losing marks even if your answer is correct.

Conclusion-

All the tips and practices mentioned above are easy to use and are very practical in nature. Over the past years, these tips have shown effective results when it comes to scoring marks. But the ultimate thing is to believe in yourself and have the determination of scoring marks.

Everyone will tell you the secrets of becoming a topper, but it is on you how to think. If you think you can, you can and if you think you can’t, you can’t. So, all I can say is first prepare yourself with grit and determination and then follow all the tips mentioned above and end up scoring good marks. Give your comments down in the comment box above all those tips which you followed to score good marks.
